Reports to: AFO Board of Directors
Position Status: Full-Time 
Compensation: $90,000-$100,000 per year. Abortion Fund of Ohio offers employer-paid benefits, 12+ paid holidays, 28 days PTO, technology and work from home stipends, and a 35 - 40 hour work week. We will also make a relocation stipend available to a chosen candidate to make a move to Ohio feasible.
Location: Located in Ohio, day to day work is 90% remote with some scheduled in person meetings. A relocation stipend is available should a candidate need to move from out of state for this role.

SUMMARY

Abortion Fund of Ohio (AFO) is seeking a values-aligned and strategic Executive Director (ED) to lead our efforts in expanding abortion access for all Ohioans. Reporting to the AFO Board of Directors, the ED will be responsible for leading and leveraging the collective power and voices of AFO's dedicated community of supporters and volunteers.

The ED will develop a comprehensive, statewide strategy to support the expansion of abortion access, legal and policy work, and identify and implement goals, tactics, and work plans in coordination with AFO’s Board of Directors and staff leaders.The ED will lead a team of committed and passionate individuals and will advocate on behalf of the staff of AFO as well as the clients and communities AFO serves. With a commitment to AFO’s mission, the ED will embrace the importance of values alignment and an intersectional framework throughout the organization’s programs and department. In addition, the ED will be an effective and flexible communicator, collaborator, and values-driven* individual.

To accomplish this objective, the Executive Director will perform the following essential job functions: 

Organizational Leadership

  • Set and direct organizational strategy, in collaboration with the board and staff, and oversee implementation of plan through effective programming, fundraising, and financial management to ensure current and future mission-aligned impact
  • Lead advocacy and abortion access expansion initiatives in partnership with AFO staff, Board,  and coalition partners. Effectively embody and communicate the organization’s overall mission and values to donors, volunteers, and the community
  • Monitor and communicate internally and with the Board of Directors regarding legislative, advocacy, and political news about reproductive health, partners and other clinics, and identify emerging issues
  • Oversee marketing and communication efforts including serving as AFO’s primary spokesperson to the community, the media, the general public/donors, and represent the organization at  coalition, donor, funder, and community events to communicate the organization’s mission
  • Build and maintain strong partnerships with community organizations, individuals, and key stakeholders to build collective power to advance abortion access - keeping a key focus on the intersectionality of the movement
  • Strategically manage and support the growth of a diverse and fully-remote team
  • Represent AFO at conferences, convenings, community events, and speaking engagements  
  • Lead a team through growth and expansion in a state with an ever changing and largely hostile landscape for reproductive freedom

 

Operational Growth

  • Maintain oversight of all operational and administrative functions of the organization including but not limited to: legal and financial compliance and risk mitigation, organizational insurance procurement and maintenance, annual and periodic staff training, and legal document and policy maintenance and ensuring federal and state nonprofit compliance
  • Manage contracts across the organization, liaising with legal and compliance staff to ensure agreements are complete, timely, and accurate
  • Create and enhance an organizational culture of positivity and productivity including values-aligned policies for staff and day to day operations
  • Recruit and retain a diverse, highly qualified staff and volunteers by providing equitable compensation, supervision and coaching, and professional development

 

Fiscal Management

  • Bring strong experience with strategic financial oversight and a comprehensive record of overseeing various functions of an organization including the oversight, preparation, administration, and control of annual budget and grants, reviewing internal audit documents and findings to ensure budget controls are implemented in accordance with fiscal best practices, aligning organizational policies and procedures and local, state and federal laws; evaluating and approving allocations and expenditures, and exploring and assessing new funding opportunities in concert with our Financial and Operations Director
  • Secure resources to support AFO’s mission through fundraising, building relationships with funders and major donors, grant-writing and management, and event oversight
  • Maintain fiscal integrity of the organization including developing a board approved annual budget, managing organizational resources to adhere to the budget, developing monthly and quarterly financial reports that accurately reflect the financial position of the organization
  • Collaborate with the Board of Directors to cultivate key donor and funder relationships and create a sustainable development strategy

 

 QUALIFICATIONS

  • Commitment to maintaining abortion access and working towards full reproductive health care for all
  • Minimum five (5) years of management experience including managing other managers in non-profit organizations
  • An understanding of of nonprofit compliance, board relations, and day-to-day nonprofit operations 
  • Demonstrated interest and capacity to generate financial resources for an organization including donor cultivation, grant-writing, and spearheading fundraising events
  • Exceptional organizational abilities, including planning, delegating, program development and task facilitation. Ability to juggle multiple projects with clear priorities and to easily articulate the connections between the big picture and specific action plans and timetables
  • Track record of successfully providing human-centered employee supervision by supporting employee growth and development and retaining staff
  • Strong financial management skills, including budget preparation, analysis, decision making, budget transparency, and reporting
  • Desire to build mutually supportive social justice movement partnerships, especially in virtual spaces
  • Ability to manage and thrive in a remote work environment working in collaboration with a diverse staff and board
  • Excellent leadership and interpersonal skills to inspire, motivate, and mediate conflict by centering restorative justice principles including self-accountability
  • Ability to translate big-picture, long-term strategies into written plans and presentations, and confidence in communicating and advocating for those plans both internally and externally
  • Dedication to anti-racist principles, power-sharing strategies, and following the lead of those most directly impacted by current or future policies and frameworks. Commitment to working within an intersectional framework that includes, but is not limited to gender, economic, and racial justice, as well as ability to operationalize and integrate these principles into communications and daily work
  • Ability to handle sensitive information with the highest degree of integrity and confidentiality 
  • Highly Value someone with lived experience navigating abortion access and services
  • Knowledge of computer applications: G Suite, MS Office, Zoom for internal communications and project management
